The THD Procedure
Developed as a gentler method for removing hemorrhoids, THD (Transanal hemorrhoidal dearterialization) is minimally invasive, with no incision made to the affected tissue, and focuses on returning patients back to normal lifestyles sooner.
Most likely performed under general anesthesia, the THD procedure involves pinpointing the arteries supplying blood to the hemorrhoids using an adapted anoscope, which combines a Doppler ultrasound probe.
Once located, the surgeon uses an absorbable suture to curtail the flow of blood, resulting in the ‘deflation’ of the blood vessels. As a surgical method to get rid of hemorrhoids, it doesn’t come any gentler, or safer, than the THD procedure.

Offering the next level in hemorrhoid surgery and treatment, the THD procedure differs from other hemorrhoid removal techniques in the following ways:
- There is no cutting or excision of the hemorrhoids, reducing postoperative complications and improving long-term results.
- The THD procedure is most often performed in an outpatient facility and usually takes 45 minutes or less in duration.
- Regular day-to-day activities can be resumed 24-48 hours after surgery.
- Because of its low recurrence rate, THD is now offered by qualified Physicians in most states throughout the US.
